The feud between the Blackburns and the Whitestones began before Evrain Blackburn was ever born. Raised by a violent, abusive father, he and his brothers grew up like soldiers trained to fight in a war they never caused.

Only the youngest of the Blackburn boys escaped the horror show they were born into. Sent away when he was only a teenager, Daniel returns home again after twenty years to find his beloved brother, Evrain, a broken, beaten man living in a place that time forgot.

In a world where violence waits around every corner and Death clicks his jaws in the shadows, Evrain tries to learn how to live for the first time in his life. As the feud between the Blackburns and Whitestones gears up for its final showdown, he and Daniel fight with one foot in the past and the other in the grave. They can only hope that it is enough to see them through to the end, no matter how bitter that might be.

This story is well written. I only noticed a few typos/ grammar mistakes, nothing to impact your enjoyment. However, I started and stopped this story so many times. It is depressing as hell. This is not a romance, or a love story, or happy at all. But it is a story about a good man in a bad place, and it is about love, but ultimately it will break your heart. Regardless for how you want or think this will end, you definitely won't be happy, but you might not be disappointed either. This story is violent from beginning to end and "playing fair" is nowhere in this story.

Evrain was once a beautiful soul. This is what happens when even a good man knows nothing but evil and isolation. Daniel has been gone for 20 years and doesn't understand this life anymore, and Evrain doesn't want him to. This is how two men cope with a lifetime apart coming together again.

MAJOR SPOILERS & Trigger Warnings:

This story contains extreme violence, murder, rape, and incest. If you were hoping to ever find out about how this horrific feud started, you will be disappointed. It's not important to the story, but it did bug me. You will find out why Daniel was sent away, and in my opinion from a man as evil as their father it's the only reason he would have let any son out from under his thumb.

A Slave to Clay edition by Justine Sebastian Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This is a dark story and it got me sad and teary-eyed from the first chapter until the end. And though it was quite predictable, I didn't mind it in the least because it still got me hooked and I couldn't put it down until I finished it. I really loved it.
I’m not a great book reviewer and don’t claim anything deep when I’m reading a book, I just tell it how I think it. This book, I wish I could do it justice in my review because I’m sure I’ll fall short. This is not a light read and if you were searching for something resembling a “slave romance” or something like that then this book is not that – this book is about death, despair, love and loss. This is a story of two brothers who survived a life of hell and loved despite it. I don’t want to give much away about the book so I’m not going to get into it like some reviewers would but I feel compelled to state that if you have an issue in reading about physical love between siblings than this is not your book – it’s not a glaring, in your face sexual relationship, in fact there is only one sex scene in the whole book and even though it did have sex, it was also one brother overcoming his memories of being raped and letting love in. The end is a dramatic as the beginning and this book will grab you and not let you go until you are finished.
Evrain Blackburn is a good man living in hell because of his abusive father and a never-ending feud with their neighbours, the Whitestones. The only good thing in Evrain’s life is his epistolary relationship with his brother Daniel, who managed to escape their miserable childhood home. Loosing Daniel may be the very thing that makes Evrain finally snap…
Justine Sebastian never fails to shatter me. Her books are an emotional roller-coaster, not suitable for the faint of heart. In A Slave to Clay, Evrain broke my heart… so many times. His story, his relationship with his violent father, the real monster in this story, and his love towards his brother… There is no good way to review this book without spoiling it, let’s just say it deals with things most people would consider unsettling, there is graphic and implicit violence, and a love story not everybody would approve of… It is a story about bad people doing bad things, but also about good people doing bad things because sometimes that’s just the way it is, and the only thing you can do is fulfil a fate which has been waiting for you since before you were born… But is also a story about redemption, with hope at the end
I can’t recommend her enough. Give this story a try. Maybe you do not like them, but I’m sure they will not leave you indifferent. They really are that good.
